What's up everyone? Hope you all are well.

I need some help on my Yamaha TTR90E.
Little back story, I bought the 90 a long time ago. It ran great with the only problem being the battery was dead and the electric start didn't work. Never fixed that cause we just kick start it. It was rode a bunch and then one day it decided it didn't want to start anymore. Found out that if I held the gas open it would start but as soon as you let off the gas it would die. Cleaned out the carb and some other stuff but couldn't get it to work. Didn't have anytime to mess with it then so it sat in the garage forever.

Fast forward to now. Welp got some time to work on it now. And my now 17 year old is interested in working on it and getting it running.
So I bought a carb and spark plug off eBay. We changed the spark plug and the oil. Pulled the old carb off and installed the new one. Cleaned out the gas tank a little. Found out the petcock was clogged up. So we cleaned that out. Ended up buying a new petcock but will not be here until next week.
We put everything back together on Saturday and the 90 fired right up with no real issues. Sounded good and ran good. We rode it around the neighborhood for a while.
Yesterday afternoon we took it out and could not get it to start. The kick starter at first sounded like it was clanking. At some point that went away. But regardless of what we did we could not get it to fire. Sounded like it wanted to put it was like it wasn't getting gas. Verified the gas was going through the petcock as well as into the carb. Will be installing the new petcock when it comes in next week. Is there something I need to look into or something I am missing? Maybe there is an issue with the kick starter?

Any suggestions?

What's the condition of the inside of the gas tank?

Crap in the gas tank blocking the jets in the new carb now?

i ran some seafoam and gas through the tank to clean it out. Nothing really came out with it.

Welp i pulled the carb and the petcock.
The petcock is clogged again. So there is something in the tank. What can i use to clean the tank? Currently there is a mixture of gas and seafoam. When the new petcock comes in i will drain the tank and add fresh gas.
The carb looked ok. There is some junk in the tube going to the engine.

Depends on what's in the tank. Rust? Dirt?

Seafoam does nothing to remove debris from a tank, it's only a "cleaner" as it flows though a carb.

Drain and flush the tank several times for a start.

If it's been lined in the past with something like Kreem and it's peeling, you may need to strip it out.

I'm guessing dirt and grime. It is dark blackish color. The tank is plastic. So wouldnt think it would rust.
It doesnt appear that it was lined with anything.
Is there something i should use to flush the tank?

I'd dump the old gas, start a fire with it or something.

Pour fresh gas in, dump it out and strain it through something a couple times, old colander, cheesecloth, old rag, etc.

Repeat a time or two with the same fresh gas.

start another fire, burn an old stump in the yard or something with the fresh gas.

Then more fresh gas, and make sure I had an inline fuel filter installed.

Plastic tanks just remove petcock and flush the tank with water hose, let it air dry overnight and put it all back together.

WillyT

Thanks guys.
The new petcock should be here Saturday. So Friday I will spend flushing the old tank.
So Saturday we will put the new petcock on along with a fuel filter. And double check the new carb and make sure all is clear.

Well petcock didnt get here until today and didnt get a chance to flush the tank until today.
There appears to be something round in there. A rock or nut or something. Cant get it out. Suggestion on getting it out? It will not come out the petcock holes. And the filler part has a huge lip.

You can get a telescoping/reach magnet from any auto parts store.  Example photo attached.

If the magnet won't pick it up, you can also get these grabber thingies at an auto parts store, Harbor Freight, etc...

WillyT

I think I have one of those grabber thingies somewhere. Now just have to remember where that is...  ???

So after some fighting and someone else having to step in to help, we finally got the piece out of the tank.

Broken off part of the petcock.

So now to put it all back together.

Thanks everyone for all the help!!

Well got everything back together and no worky.

Double check everything just to make sure i didn't miss something. Kicker sounds and feels good. It turns over. Just wont fire. Gas is filling up the fuel filter as well as the bowls on the carb.

Not really sure.
