I am joining the group to Alaska. I'm leaving early to visit family in Minnesota and avoid the long days at the start. Ride report will be here.
I have been remodeling my house, in preparation to sell. I have had little time to ride, and thankful I prepared for the trip months ago. My bike and I are covered in the dust of demolition and construction. Time to blow it all off. I leave Wednesday, July 6.
Safe travels!!!!
Have fun and ride safe.
Go get em! Have a safe and exciting trip!
gotta spot tracker? (here or private)
i'll be anticipating the updates from you along the way.
que the traveling music!
SPOT tracker link to follow. I'll post closer to departure. Don't want you guys to know where I am until then :p
Stars have not aligned. I will not be leaving early. I will be leaving with the group on Saturday. Stay tuned :)
Here is what has to go: bags on left, top to bottom - tank, rear seat, rear rack. Gear - sleeping bag/pillow, air pad, chair, cold weather gear, hip bag(thanks A&M for that idea

), shovel/hatchet, tent, fuel bottles, clothes, shower bag, tools swimsuit, plus food/cooking stuff.

And packed with small cooler filled with food/cooking gear on top. Still working on securing the fuel bottles.

Someone wanna check this and verify its working for you guys? Emma little technologically challenged ;D
the link looks good. Just make sure when you turn your SPOT on that you press the button (probably a footprint) and make sure it starts flashing. That is what will ping the satellite every 5 mins or so and send an update with your position so SPOT can pin it on the map (which will show up in the link you shared once it has points to plot.).
Thx.
have fun and ride safe.
Looking forward to the pics and reports. This is a dream trip of mine...
Ten months of planning and waiting is now down to two hours. Wow.

LET THAT THUMPER EAT. I LOVE YOU.
Looks like they made it to a camping spot in Illinois for the evening.
Yes. If you're following both SPOTs you will notice I wimped out at 11:00pm, 40 miles from camp. I was at my limit. For safety I got a hotel room. Waiting for a bad storm to pass and then I will meet the group at...Lightning Lake. Today, appropriately named.
The blue dot is where I am. The group is 40 miles NW. Imma sit tight a minute 8)
I have a longer fuel range and can catch up with fewer stops if necessary.

Just checked Trip Advisor .... Viking Cafe in Fergus Falls has good reviews for breakfast....
You are only about 220 miles from Canada! ;)
The absolute worst storm I've ever camped in. I know now why they named it Lightning Lake. Monsoon Bay would've been appropriate also.

One of my favorite lines is by Dirty harry when he said: "A man's got to know his limitations." That applies to women to. You did the smart thing. It sounds like a really long day's ride if Ya'll went that late.
You guys are driving yourselves like escaped prisoners! There is no way I could ever keep up on a trip this intense. My helmet's off to you all.
Don't forget to smell the roses... or the moose poop, whichever is apropos.
Nothing like having everything you own completely soaked. For days.
Carry on. I'm watching your spots like a tv show, trying to imagine the country as you zoom by it.

Same here Kris. SPOT seems to be generally accurate to withing about 10-15 feet in my experience, so you/I/we can switch to satellite view and zoom in and pretty much see which spot that parked their bikes in when they broke for lunch, which camp site they pitched their tents at, etc.
Also cool (if you are a goober like me) tying in their "stops and gos" with the weather.
Right now they are stopped about where the red dot is. (just checked again and it seems they are actually stopped a little west of the red dot. About where the "V" in Valley is)
Smart time to take a break I'd say.
Not a lot of time to update you guys so far. We are stopped for dinner in lloydminster, Alberta. We have ridden in the rain for the last 3 days. I guess that's why it's called an adventure!
Hey, I know I've ridden hard and put myself up wet for a couple days...but a little girl in the bathroom just asked her mom, "Is that a lady?" Hmmm. Guess I should brush my hair :D
We are in for the night. Sweet dreams BamaRides from Holden, Alberta, Canada :)*

LMBO...the brutal honesty of a child. :D
Hang in there.
So they spent the night camping in Holden, Alberta. Population 381 in an area of .66 sq miles.
Trivia: (from Wikipedia) Birthplace of Dale Armstrong - successful NHRA and IHRA drag racer in the 70's. In the 60's Armstrong campaigned a Chevy II converted to a funny car. His car was named "The Canuck".
He later became crew chief for Kenny Bernstein. Bernstein was the very first to break the 300 mph mark in an engine tuned by Armstrong.
Armstrong was the first crew chief to test funny cars in a wind tunnel.
Good to see you guys making it. We had Hurricane force winds on Friday night at Grandfather mountain. It did break some stuff.
Trying to catch up work from 4 days off in summer sucks.
Yall have fun ya hear.
Looks like camp with showers and laundromat tonight! And before dark!! We'll be at Dawson Creek

Currently in Watson Lake. Plan for Whitehorse tonight. Services are sketchy. Update when able.
Paradise home for the night. Fox Lake, Yukon, Canada. Slept by a bubbling stream. Took these pictures about 10:30pm local time.

100 miles from our camp for the night...Chicken, Alaska. Likely no service there. We'll check in from Fairbanks the next day.
Tok, Alaska. After 120 miles of dirt/gravel, one near high side and a close encounter with a fox. But I'm still smiling :)
I'm on Top of the World!

Great trip. I am jealous. By the way your SPOT quit sending at the Canadian border.
We are hold up in a hotel in Fairbanks. It's 50 degrees and raining. Rest day today.
Apparently the SPOT does not have good coverage in rural Alaska. Who knew? When it di'nt send or receive a signal for awhile it shut off. We didn't know and didn't turn it back on. Keeping it off now to save battery. But everyone knows where we are, so it's all good. Everyone is safe and dry, for now. Updates when the excitement continues.
We are doing laundry and going through gear to send home. My list of unused gear so far:
A cork screw
A bottle opener
A pillow case
Think I'll save the postage ;)
Camping right outside Denali National Park. Ride through the park then head East and then South.

49th State Brewing Co. They have the old transit bus used for the movie "Into the Wild." The original bus is 35 miles in to the "wild" from where we are, still where Chris McCandless was stranded.

You go girl. Enjoying all of your post. Keep'em coming.
That is a really great panoramic pic. This is epic !
This is awesome, wishing ya'll the best.
Go to Alaska they said. It'll be fun they said 8)

Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada for tonight. The crystal ball sees a hotel room in my near future :)
I love my crystal ball.
The tire is hanging in there anyway. Looks like lots of tread life left.
The last two days have been grueling for me. We all agreed if yesterday was not the absolute worst days we have ever ridden, it ranks in the top two. I am exhausted, cold and everything I have with me is wet. For that, I am ill prepared to ride today. I have rented a uhaul to get me to Montana, where hopefully I can see Don for a couple hours before heading out on the bike to make my way home on the United States of America Interstate system. You can call me a wimp, but there ain't no shame here. I rode to Alaska and part of the way back :). I know my limitations and the limitations of my bike. I am making a judgment call for my safety. My SPOT will be on.
See you fellow BamaRides folks sooner than anticipated.
You are not a wimp, you have traveled more miles in 2 weeks than a lot of riders do in a year. When you do get back you do not have to worry about being cold but still might get wet.
You are not a whimp nor a failure.
You rode a single cylinder motorcycle from Alabama to freaking Alaska.
Read that again over and over. It's pretty awesome.
So I say, good for you. Just getting there was an accomplishment that 99.99% of the population would never ever consider. Take it easy and come back safe.
Might I suggest you avoid the interstates on the way back unless you really need o make time. There is still a lot of beautiful country between Montana and Alabama and you won't se it from the freeway. I'm not saying take the goat trails and such. But the secondaries will be a much more relaxed ride than fighting against freeway traffic all the way back. Riding the freeway will be stressful, tiring and generally no fun.
Just sayin.
Oh. And one more thing. Remember that Adventure is Adversity in Retrospect. You have had a grand adventure.
Nothing wrong with making an intelligent decision. When you are tired you might make a mistake that could hurt you. Best to come home in one piece and remember the fun you had on the road.
Karla, if everyone was a wimp like you,...this would be an awesome world! I'm looking forward to seeing some more of your ride reports when you get time and energy.
I hope I'm not too late. My in laws live just a few minutes outside of Great Falls, MT if you need help or a free place to stay. Just lmk and I'll tell them. I'm sure they'd be glad to have you. Seriously !
Ha! It's already been said, you've ridden more in a couple of weeks, than most motorcycle owners do in a year or two.

Or a lifetime, in my case. You are a confirmed badass for life.
Add my voice to the Karla ain't no damn wimp chorus.
This has been an awesome report of an awesome ride!
There is more to come 8)

Your SPOT is not working.....
Be safe!
I am in a hotel in Billings, MT. It shuts off automatically to save battery life if it doesn't move and I don't send a message. I will start it again in the morning. :)
You are anything but a wimp Karla. You would seen a wimp about the Canadian border if I had been along. :) Slow down, sleep, eat right..Alabama isn't going anywhere.
St. Louis is behind me. Home this evening!
Rolled in about 15 minutes ago. Home safe and sound. What an adventure!
WELCOME HOME WOMAN! There's no place like home. We are all proud of you! Thank you for taking us along through your post.
Welcome Home!!!
Welcome back!
Welcome Back!
Welcome back! Glad you are safe.
Woohoo! Last of the group is expected home today! I'm kinda having group separation anxiety.
