Title: Cows double the price of a KTM
Post by: Gam on January 28, 2017, 07:33:29 AM

The United States is a member of the World Trade Organization. Members countries have agreed to settle their trade disputes through this organization.  Well US beef producers got pissed because the EU bans beef with growth hormones.  The WTO found that the US was being hurt by 116.8 a million a year and authorized the US to get back at them with tariff increases in that amount. So the US gets up this list of EU products for 100 percent tariff. The list is later modified to include motorcycles and mopeds under 500 cc.   So the EU agrees to a reduced tariff on 45.000 tons of beef a year without growth hormones. Well this rocks on a while and now the beef producers are saying this isn't doing it and they have petitioned to reinstate the list. All the products on the list are for human consumption except these

I don't understand the beef producers response.  It does no good to penalize the EU for this because it is consumer driven revulsion to growth hormones.  It is not being driven by European beef producers.  They are responding to consumer rejection with protectionist payback.
