Title: Alabama the Beautiful.
Post by: Yankee Dog on June 29, 2017, 09:30:22 PM
The missus and have talked about a trip around the boarders of Alabama for a while.  We usually take a long trip every summer so it was decided that this year would be that year.  And of course since as some of you may know we do enjoy stopping at microbreweries from time to time it seemed appropriate to combine the two activities.

So off we go.

First stop Florence and Bluewater Brewery.

The weather earlier was looking a might iffy but by the time Bratso (that would be the missus) got home from work and we hit the road all was well.

Bluewater Brewery is a small place.  They only had three beers on tap but they were all good.  My favorite was the General John Coffee Stout. I do like a good used motor oil and General John certainly met the requirement.  I didn't get pics of the inside but we will endeavor to do better in the future.  The bartender was of the friendly sort.  He gave us samples of the other beers on tap, to include a quad that had not been released yet. Yummy.  Life is good.

Tomorrow's stop is Tuscaloosa and the Band of Brothers Brewery.  Time allowing we may also stop in at Black Warrior.  So tag along as we drink our way around Alabama and try to get a little motorcycle riding in between.

Great day for a ride.  First stop was Waterloo. Our Northwestern most point.  I always like the riverside drive on the way out there.  I think the Bratso has some pics of it.  This is the Trail of Tears memorial

I have never ridden much on the west side of our state.  I kind of liked it.  A lot of chipseal lane and a half twisty roads.  Just perfect for the baby beemer.  We were in in out of the rain all day.  Only came down hard once but we were able to find shelter

Today's featured brewery is Band of Brothers in Tuscaloosa. They go after a European style.  And although I personally prefer American stouts and such.  They were stil pretty good.

Round two is Black Warrior Brewing

This the most popular brewery in town. But I find the beer to be a bit bland.  Not bad mind you. But not as full flavored as what Huntsville has to offer.

That is likely it for the night. I will have a
Headache in the morning for sure.  I am not as young as I used I be.

Today's stop is Slowboat Brewery in Laurel, MS.   Yeah I know Mississippi is not Alabama. But Alabama is a bit short of breweries in this part of the state.  So Mississippi is forced to take up the slack

Turnes out MS just changed their brewery laws and now allow them to sell their own beer on premises.   There are parties going on all across the state.  This one was hopping with bands and the whole nine.

Slowboat is in an old warehouse/factory. The decor was shall we say a bit rough.  But we loved it and the beer was great. They had a really nice milk stout and a sour or two that we actually drinkable.

Laurel is not exactly on the route to anywhere but if you do find yourself in the neighborhood it is certainly worth a stop

Man this looks fun. None of the guys I ride with care about craft beer.

Band of Brothers is one I'd like to visit. I've had some of their beers at Wish You Were Beer in Huntsville/Madison, and thought they were pretty good.

Had not heard of Bluewater. Surprised you didn't hit up Singin' River in Florence. They're the most well known from that area.

Post by: Yankee Dog on July 01, 2017, 09:14:58 PM
Singing River is more polished than we like.  Bluewater is much smaller. The folks behind the bar are still the ones brewing the beer.  An in my opinion anyway, the beer is more full flavored.

It looks like you are heading towards Gulf Shores.  There is a place called Big Beach Brewery (300 E. 24TH AVE.
GULF SHORES, AL 36542).  You may want to stop by.  We live in the area so we might could meet you for dinner.  Just let us know.  Looks like an awesome ride.

Growing up in Mississippi, I always hated Laurel.  To me, it was just a dump that had to be traversed on the way to Hattiesburg and Gulfport.

A few years ago (ten...?), the Yamaha motorcycle dealer in Meridian closed and moved shop to Laurel.  I always liked that shop.  Good Christian owners, fair prices, good service.

Now with a brewery there, I have two reasons to visit Laurel.  Guess that I will have to revisit my old negative perception and see if it is time to change.

You should be enjoying a Fairhope 51 Pale Ale right about now. If you like IPA's then the Take the Causeway is good. If you like Stout's then it's the Judge Roy Bean.

We enjoyed a few

Didn't get to all of them

We have had the 51 and Judge Roy before so we tried a few of the new ones.  I really tried to like them. But sours, ciders and jalapeƱo are just not my thing.  I drank the IPA which was good, left the rest to Bratso and continued on with a Judge Roy Bean which was outstanding as I knew it would be.

The tap room is really nice and I was kind of surprised that it was almost empty.  Ah well. They close at 7:00pm tonight so it delivery tonight.  This trip has been full of great beer.   Great food, not so much.  Ya got to have your priorities.

As for the ride. We are on a motorcycle remember.   We did run into a bit of dirt, or shall I say sand.

We really lucked out with the Mobile Bay Ferry.  It was HOT and the cars were backed up when we arrived,  but it seems they will squeeze motorcycles into the cracks so we rolled on the moment we got there and departed not long after.

Today's route included a stop at the National Infantry Museum at Ft Benning, GA.  They have changed the location and updated it a bit since last I was here.  Cool place well worth the visit.

Now I appreciate the pride others take in their service and services and I don't mean to hurt any feelings but the bottom line is that If You Ain't Infantry, You Ain't Shit.

Brewery Time:  Red Clay

WOW this is a great place.  Twelve different beers and all (ok most) of them are great.  The owners are behind the bar and are great folk.

Oh and did I mention a live band playing Irish tunes.

This day just about brings this little sodden odyssey to a close.  We head home tomorrow.

But today brings us to Anniston.  Not far from from Opelika as the crow flies, but of course we didn't follow the crow.   We headed back to the Georgia order and turned north.  We found a series of nice county roads that brought us North. Some of the pavement was a bit rough but the traffic was light and the stop signs were few.

Still, it wasn't far and we rolled into Anniston with time to kill. So we headed to the Anniston Natural Science Museum.

Nice place but the real gem was the Burman Museum out back.  Holy moly did they have a collection.  They have 22 sculptures by Remington.

I'm sorry I forgot to take pictures but they have a firearms collection that is the best I have seen anywhere, including the Smithsonian and the NRA museum in Wash D.C.   It is worth a trip for this alone.

Oh yeah, this suppose to be about beer
