Route Details to come after some scouting rides.
WHERE: 377 County Road 1286
Vinemont, Al. 35179
We'll have breakfast for everyone that Saturday morning, usually bacon and pancakes.

Saturday night...BYOM (Bring Your Own Meat) We'll throw whatever we have on the grill that night.
ALSO, The highlight of the weekend, screening of "Little Fauss and Big Halsey" on the BIG screen outside Saturday night.
We'll have a bonfire, and also a fire pit to stand around and tell, true stories ONLY :lol-049: :lol-049:
We'll call SAUSAGE FEST Friday night if anyone comes to campout that night. Stock up on Conecuh, and any other sausage you might want to try.
Adult beverages ARE allowed on Friday and Saturday nights...frowned upon at lunch Saturday... :DANCING-banana-032:
Pictures and more details to follow whenever I'm finished with these 20 days straight at work.
Going to be a good one as usual! I hope a few more people show up to camp than the last couple years!

If we ride up into southern middle Tennessee, YEP....If we do a "dead-end" tour of Bankhead, nope.
What kind of riding is this gentlemen? I have a V Strom 1000 that is just for road use and a WR426 that is street legal but not very fun over 60/on highways. I am in Scottsboro so that is an easy hour an a half on the Strom but it would be a bit different on the WR.
I'll be on a 86 Honda 250. Top speed with me on it is 60. I'll be hauling the bike to the start point.
There may be some mud and maybe some water crossings, depending on which way Al goes.

Big bike friendly. Al usually rides 2-up on a worn-out KLR650 and does just fine. Having a semi-knobbie tire will help, but not necessary if you ride conservatively.
If I can talk someone into buying my Vulcan so that I can buy a KLR, I might make it...
I am thinking I will try to make it if I still have my WR by then. I just put it up for sale ($2,300 if you want it)
Anyone coming from near Scottsboro? I don't have a truck.
If I sell the WR, there isn't much I can do as the V Strom is all street, no dirt. If I ride the WR, it would be nice to trailer it. Also, it will just be day trip rides right? The WR can't carry anything for overnight (again why i want to trailer.)
Thanks guys.
Yes, for this ride we typically camp at Al's place and ride during the day getting lunch somewhere along the route. We return to camp to cook dinner and watch a movie or football!

I'm in Paint Rock Valley. I plan to haul my bike over on Saturday morning and come back on Saturday afternoon/evening. You're welcome to ride with me if you want.
What is KSU time as of now?

Count me as tentative. If I can get off work that Friday I should be able to make it. Assuming you got parking space? I'd most likely bring my DR 350 up in the back of the pickup as opposed to riding the 1190.

Thanks jrobinson. I will let you know. a Saturday trip would probably work best for me anyhow.
This is still dependent on still having the WR. I have only had one good potential buyer, but he is supposed to come check out the bike next weekend. Fingers crossed.
This ride is a good reason to not sell it.
If we do decide to ride around Bankhead, Chef Troy's would be a highlight to the trip!! :respect-058:

Breakfast 7:30is.....KSU 9am......
Still haven't pinned down the exact route just yet. It may depend on the weather more than anything else...
No matter the route, it'll be good fun with good people.
Okay I still have the WR so I should be coming to this. I have a couple of friends that are interested too.
What is the plan Saturday morning? I know kick stands are up at 9, but do we have to do a good bit of pavement riding to get to the trails? Only street legal bikes right? (As in no 4 wheelers or off road only bikes.)
How long will we be out riding? Do we eat lunch while out?
Looking forward to this!

Reckon we could take the group around the Flint Creek trail in Bankhead? It's $3, or is it $5 :thinking-022:...anyway. Nothing in the trail is to difficult.
We could go by there, let those that want to do the loop could, the rest could, possibly, ride some of the other local dirt roads around.
Y'all that have ridden it before, give me some feedback.
Like I said, it's not a very difficult trail, I rode it 2-up on a worn out KLR...how difficult could it be? :cool08:
And I think John and Paula Alderman rode part of it in their Ural sidecar rig....BIG FUN there. :DANCING-banana-032:

Sunday, ya say??
That is the plan but nothing in stone yet. It is all pending if they can stick around until Monday morning. If they have to leave Sunday afternoon then we will probably just hit the Cahaba Wildlife Management Area.
I will keep you posted!
Looks like we won't be riding Bankhead Sunday. Dad has to head back to South Carolina

Melony and I took a scouting drive, in the jeep, today. I've got a few roads on the route that are not in the "Free State" rides. We'll be riding a few dead-ends, we couldn't drive to the end in the jeep, but they seem to be well traveled by hunters. We also-ran ride the 2 down to the river if we all want to. There may be some folks that have never been down those 2 roads( :lol-049:).......
Also, maybe a stop at the natural bridge recreation area, it's a free area with a cool natural bridge that's easily seen from the top, if we don't want to hike to the bottom.
We'll also be passing by the Flint Creek trail if anyone wants to do he loop, a $3 fee for that.
Options abound....lol.....
I have to work Friday, but Melony will be here, y'all can come anytime Friday.
So I officially retire (semi), and this ride STILL falls on a shift I have to work! I might make it Saturday, possibly even Friday night, but I'll have to cut out Saturday night and be at work Sunday morning. Maybe I can work that out. I'd hate to miss another one!
It seems that I'm going to have to miss out on the ride this year, but I thought I would make sure everyone is aware that the 18th is the opening day of gun deer season so be on the lookout for hunters; especially those who like to shoot at sounds.
Not looking good for getting off work Friday to drive up there.

WELL, dang.....that's good news :thinking-022:
We may skip a couple of the dead-ends and just ride down to the river. :bike-038:
Breakfast menu Saturday morning will be biscuits and gravy, with 10 pounds of bacon on the side. :drooling-2:

My new to me KLX has a slipping clutch. I'm hoping it is because the PO put risers on it and the clutch cable is stretched and I cant get any freeplay out of it. Ordered a longer cable yesterday, supposed to be here Wednesday.

Al,

No ride planned for Sunday, but we can always take suggestions and go for a ride.... Since we're riding some Bankhead Saturday, maybe we could ride southern/middle Tennessee Sunday :thinking-022:
It's and hour to get to the good stuff, but it's worth it....
I hope the chance of rain fades off.
So I'm pretty much stuck with riding the WR an hour and a half to get there but I'm kind of thinking about bringing a tent and sleeping bag on my back and staying the night. It will be nice to rest for a night before making the ride back home.
If anyone is coming through/near scottsboro trailering their bike... I'm all ears

Just ordered a pair of waterproof boots
(my old ones fell apart and my new ones aren't waterproof)
Because it looks like we are going to get soggy Saturday

. They better come in Friday like Amazon guaranteed.
Is this ride going to be more relaxed? It sounds like it. I have dirt bike armor that I can wear but it sounds like my normal road gear will be fine for this ride. Road gear or dirt bike armor?

I like this Motorcycle community. No one cares how many people show up as long as THE BIKES are there.... lol
Another great event put on by Al and Melony. They really go above and beyond when they host an event. Not only is there some great riding but they feed us before and after the ride!
A few days ago the weather forecast was not looking good. When I got on the road this morning heading to Vinemont it was lloking pretty gloomy and even rained a little on the way down. I figured the weather would keep the number of riders down but that wasn't the case. There was a pretty good crowd feeding their faces when I arrived. So I joined them. Biscuits and Bacon! Thanks AL and Melony.

At first only a few people seemed to want to ride it but then we all caved in to peer pressure and off we went. I haven't done one of these OHV trails in quite a while. I used to do them regularly when I had lighter bikes like my KDX200. The heavy KLR is not the best bike for something like this but then I can't really use that as an excuse when some of the other riders had even heavier bikes.

The other side. Somehow I just don't think I'd want my name on a headstone when I was still alive.

A good way to take a nap.

By the time we finished lunch it must have been close to 3 so some of us headed home to try to beat the weather. I did manage to make it home with only a brief rain on the way.

It was a great day. Thanks again Al and Melony :)
Hate that I missed this but glad that you guys had a good time. Will keep me eyes open for the next offroad ride!

Thanks for taking all the pictures! Do you mind if I share of these on facebook? I didn't even realize you taking that one of me with my feet up while we were waiting on Kyle and David.

Use them for anything you want.
Thanks! It was a pleasure meeting and riding with you today. Glad we both got out of the storm before it hit us!

I actually found it very interesting. Many people would not take their adventure bike on trails like that.
Thank you for making the effort to record and post video!

I reckon we could tell no one was hurt by the argument that began right after the incident...... Just a bit of pride spilled into the river.

This was a fantastic time! Many thanks to Al and Melony for their hospitality and for putting on such a great event; you meet the best people on two wheels!
Another great Goodwin Ride! Thanks to everyone who lent a hand! We had a great group of riders for this event! For someone who was timid to bring his shiny new AT to a dual sport ride, Alex didn't hesitate to take it on the Flint Creek Trail! It was impressive to see him handle the rock ledges on that bike!! Welcome to the club and sorry for the addiction, :-\ , it is a hard habit to break!
