Stator on 2007 Daytona 675

My charging system is not performing correctly. I have replaced the battery with a new Shorai and the regulator / rectifier (RR). While pulling the RR, I tested the stator for voltage and case grounding. It's making the AC voltage but the outputs are grounding to the case. I'm about ready to order a new stator but may need some help popping that case off without damaging the stator cover. What is the best way to remove the cover without leaving a gouge / crease in the case?
